What did you do this past week?

This past week I spent a lot of time working on the coming phase of the IDB project. Specifically, one other group member and I updated our “about page” with dynamic information pulled from the GitLab API, fixed some issues from the previous phase, implemented searching, sorting, and filtering of our data in the backend API endpoints, and provided our front end team with some documentation on the updated endpoints. Aside from the IDB project, I attended lectures, read the assigned article, and now have written the blog post.

What’s in your way?

My answer to this question has gotten somewhat repetitive, but nothing. I would have a lot more to say if the blog post were due Wednesday, but because I complete all my work in a week before the end of the week I don’t face any obstacles until Monday.

What will you do next week?

Next week I will meet with our project’s front-end team to help them finish their part of this phase and make sure the ends connect smoothly. I will also write new backend tests to validate new functionality. Outside of the IDB project I will read the assigned article, attend lectures, and write the blog post.

If you read it, what did you think of The Interface Segregation Principle?

I really liked The Interface Segregation Principle. Design patterns are something that really interest me, so the articles for the past few weeks I’ve found very enjoyable. I find it particularly interesting how with good design patterns, the fact that the articles were written about 25 years ago doesn’t mean they’re obsolete. In fact, good design patterns assist the scalability and incorporation of more modern technology.

What was your experience of instance methods, class methods, static methods, regular expressions, and relational algebra? (this question will vary, week to week)

This was a really interesting topic that distinguishes Python from some other languages to me. I’m excited to see if I’ll be able to incorporate some of these concepts into the IDB project.

What made you happy this week?

The UT victory over OSU was huge. Lots of Texas games have been super fun to watch this year and it feels nice to win.

What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

My tip of the week is to make sure you write good tests on the IDB project and integrate them into the GitLab CI pipeline. I’m not sure if this is a project requirement or not, but it is both satisfying and reassuring to see a pipeline pass tests that run automatically.
