CS373 Fall 2020: Week of Nov 16 — Nov 22

What did you do this past week?
This past week I refactored and styled a good portion of my group’s IDB project. I also attended the lectures, read the assigned reading, and now am writing the blog post.
What’s in your way?
Currently, nothing. Last week I has to spend a lot of time refreshing my JavaScript abilities, but once I felt up to speed on that the refactoring and styling was a fairly quick process.
What will you do next week?
This next week I’ll spend some time relaxing with my family for Thanksgiving. I’ll also start studying for the final exam and start work on my group’s final presentation, specifically looking into how to create D3 visualizations for our project.
If you read it, what did you think of What Happens to Us Does Not Happen to Most of You?
It’s good to read articles like this as a reminder of the pervasive and upsetting problems in the software industry. When you aren’t faced with the challenges of dealing with sexism in the workplace it can be easy to imagine that it isn’t a problem. Reading articles such as this one are a good reminder that such behavior does exist and that the solution takes all of us.
What was your experience of refactoring? (this question will vary, week to week)
My experience of refactoring was pretty standard. I feel I already knew and had experience with a lot of the concepts we discussed, but it can be nice to put some formal rules with my perception of things like “best practice.”
What made you happy this week?
As always lots of little things. It’s hard to believe how quickly this semester has gone by and I’m excited about Thanksgiving break.
What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?
I’ve written about this once before, but my pic of the week is this website: https://www.keybr.com/
Previously, I was unable to type correctly. I used only 2–4 fingers at a time and my typing speed was probably around 20–30 WPM. Using this website for the past two weeks, I’ve been able to learn proper touch typing and now type around 50 WPM. Still not spectacular, but a big improvement.
