Blog 2: Week of August 31 — September 6

What did you do this past week?

For CS373, the only things I did this week other than attending the class was the previous blog post, the two Perusall articles, and plan an approach to project 1.

What’s in your way?

Luckily I didn’t face many obstacles for the course this week, but the learning curve of Perusall did slow me down a little in doing the two reading assignments.

What will you do next week?

Next week I will again attend the class and do the blog post and Perusall reading. Hopefully, I will also make a significant amount of progress towards completing project 1.

What was your experience of assertions, unit tests, and coverage? (this question will vary, week to week)

I had quite a bit of experience in these areas before this class. One of the projects I had at my first internship was increasing unit test coverage on a few components.

How are you doing and holding up? What’s been most helpful for you in terms of support at this time?

I’m doing/holding up well. I’ve been able to hang out a lot with my roommate and two of our friends who we include in our COVID “pod.” The ability to interact with them has provided a ton of support.

What made you happy this week?

This week I was able to safely hang out with some friends and really got back into the groove of working productively on school work. Both of these made me happy because I feared it would be challenging to be social and productive when I spend most of the day in my apartment due to the pandemic.

What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

While I’ve used Git/GitHub quite a bit, I’ve never felt overly knowledgeable or comfortable using Git commands in the command line. This week I read over this tutorial from GitLab which not only teaches some features of GitLab but also covers using Git in the command line. I would recommend a quick read to anyone else who doesn’t feel particularly confident using Git.
